Officer Douglas Scott Barney
Officer Douglas Scott Barney, killed in the line of duty Sunday, was known and loved by many. He made a major impact on many of his students at a local school, where he had worked extra shifts as a school resource officer, and by his fellow officers who say they couldn’t have asked for a more selfless colleague.
He is also mourned by many at 2News, where officer Barney worked many nights and weekends as a security guard. He was working at 2News Saturday night with crowd control and escorting employees to their cars after the late show.
The Unified Police Department has released the funeral arrangements. The services will be open to the public starting at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, at the Maverik Center in West Valley City.
Officer Barney was the married father of three children who had just overcome cancer a year before his death and was finally enjoying being healthy again and spending time with his family.
Barney was an 18-year veteran of the Unified and Taylorsville police departments.
