Tuesday Night Musings with Coach Jess.

Ya feelin’ lucky?

Alright friends….It is a little bit past St. Patty’s day but of course I had “luck” on my mind, and more specifically – do we get lucky, or create our own luck?

Yes – we get “lucky” sometimes? Of course! And it is freakin’ awesome. We find 5 bucks in our pocket, or we just happen to win that barbell for doing the Open. However, how much of life, business, fitness, or parenting do we attribute to luck, and how much of it do we contribute to hard work?

I stumbled across a new podcast, and I know most of us are crazy busy and don’t have time for more media…but if you do, check out “How I Built This with Guy Raz” (it’s on NPR, nerd-alert, right?).

Anyway, he discusses and interviews the stories behind some of the companies we know best – and their journeys to success. As I have listened to some of the stories, yes – there is a bit of luck; but more importantly it is their own failures, hard work, and reworking the idea or business vision that leads to success. As we hear time and time again – with failure, comes the greatest growth.

So how do we attribute this to life, business, or fitness? Well….as I see it, we grind!! We can’t walk around thinking that we will get lucky and get that chest-to-bar pull-up, or that someone is just lucky, because they know how to hurt in a workout, or that someone is lucky they started a successful business, or XYZ is so lucky that they have “good kids.” We need to take responsibility in all areas of our life, and we WORK. We attack weakness in the gym, we accept failure in a relationship and learn, we take criticism in our work environment and we do BETTER. The only way to get “lucky” is to WORK.

We have every chance in the day to find failure, and we have every chance to say “today, I have taken steps forwards to my goals” – whatever those are.  One thing I find myself saying to you guys in the box is “don’t leave here thinking you could have done more and could have worked harder.” That’s ALL you can do in ANY area. Leave work thinking you’ve done the best you can, leave the gym with the same mindset, put that effort in your relationships and with your kids – do what you can in that moment, and don’t look back.

Go check out that podcast – and remember the harder you work, the luckier you get!

Thanks for reading!

Sincerely,

Coach Jess
