Tuesday Night Musings – By Coach Julia
It’s The Little Things.
As an individual that divides her time between being a full time litigation attorney, mom of two children, soon to be wife, and box owner, I often reflect on each of those roles and ponder where does my personal self or wellness fit into that picture (i.e. how do I create my happy place to be successful, productive, and fun) besides at 3 a.m. when a crying baby finally is back in bed, or everyone is asleep and I have a moment just to myself, to breathe, to think with no one around me, to make demands or to judge, and I can finally relax for a second.
I have realized a few things in those quiet moments, that I believe not only can help with being successful in the box but can translate to being successful at life, and I’m going to pass on my top 5 tips for you to consider as you see fit:
1. I am happiest when I am doing something physical, it is my stress release, and making time to get to the box is a critical key in making me more productive all around – I feel I’m better at everything I do when I get to work out. So, when you wonder, should I go to the box today, just go. Aim for 2 to 5 wods a week (if you are a new mom or work is crazy – aim for 2, if life is simpler and you have some time – aim for 5). I believe individuals that integrate fitness into their routine are usually able to focus and perform better in their personal life;
2. Eat with healthy principles in mind – drink your water and eat your vegetables, eat your darn spinach. Popeye was on to something – spinach has lots of fiber and good things like helping with your bowels. Yet enjoy a treat now and then, but just plan your treat and don’t let that chocolate cake just happen to you every… single … night;
3. Try to sleep more (clearly I am in need of working on this one);
4. Be Grateful – if you are reading this post, you are alive, and if you can focus on any of these tips, your world is pretty stable and awesome – enjoy that you have the ability to be part of a box, that you have a job, and give someone you love a hug or tell them you love them – it’s amazing how a little joy is contagious; and,
5. Finally, take care of the little things – listen to your coach’s advice, cheer on others during a Wod, be genuinely happy for someone else’s success, clean up that dropped paper towel, put away weights, even if they are not yours. Make your bed, do some laundry, clean your car out, put away your shopping cart even if you have to walk across the whole parking lot to get there. When you are at work, answer the email you don’t want to respond to, do the task you dislike first, smile at the person you know or like the least, pay attention to details in your work and redo it if it is not up to par (before anyone tells you to), take accountability for your results – good or bad. Also, do not forget to be kind, help someone else even if it’s not going to benefit you, and it’s amazing how you will find that if you do these little things, that suddenly you may find yourself feeling lucky and good things start happening.
I promise that it’s the little things, and I hope this may help someone just a tiny bit on their path towards success (or survival for any new moms out there!).
